 Rummy is a card game that requires two decks of cards, including a total of two jokers. A player can win a Rummy card game only after a valid declaration by picking and discarding cards from the given two piles.

Out of the two, one pile is a closed deck (from which the players choose the cards), and the other is an open deck that is formed by the cards discarded by the players. To beat the other player, you must group the cards in specific sequences and sets. In the Rummy card game, the cards in each deck rank low to high, starting with Ace,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, Jack, Queen, and King.

A deck of cards has 52 cards and a joker card. There are four suits in a deck Clubs, Hearts, Spades & Diamonds. The cards are divided into four sets of 13 cards from 2 to 10 and face value cards like Ace (A), King (K), Queen (Q), and Jack (J), in 4 different suits.

NOTE: In most rummy games, aces can be low or high, but not both. So, runs involving the ace must take the form A-K-Q or A-2-3 but not K-A-2.

 Players and Deck

Two to Five players can play rummy, and each player gets 13 cards. If two or four players play rummy, they will have to use two card decks (104 cards) and four jokers, and if five players are playing, they will have to use four card decks and six jokers.. Every player deals with the card turn by turn.

How to Calculate Rummy Points?

In the Rummy card game, the cards in each deck rank low to high, starting with Ace,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, Jack, Queen, and King. You get 10 points for Ace, Jack, Queen, King, while the remaining cards get points equal value to their face value.

 For example, card seven will have 7 points, and so on. Both printed and wild jokers have zero points. Point calculation in gin rummy is also the same 

If the losing player is unable to make two sequences, including one pure sequence, the value of all the cards in his hands is added up (topped at 80 points). If the losing player has managed to form two or more sequences, including one pure sequence, then only the points of the cards that are not in a sequence or set are added up.

Wrong Declaration:

If a player declares without forming valid sets or sequences, he gets a penalty of 80 points.

First Drop:

If a player chooses to drop out of the game on his very first turn without picking a card from the open deck, he gets twenty points.

Middle Drop:

Any player who drops out of the game any time after his first turn, he gets Forty points.

Consecutive Turn Misses:

Any player who misses his turn three consecutive times he gets automatically dropped out of the game.

Leaving the Table:

A player gets a middle drop of 40 points if he chooses to leave the table after picking a card.

Losing Players with a Valid Hand:

Two points are given to the player who declares second and has a valid hand. So, if you win a game against players who also have a valid hand, the losing players with valid hands lose by two points each.

The aim of Rummy Card Game

The rummy card game aims to arrange the 13 cards invalid runs sequences or sets. A player must make a minimum two sequences. Out of which one needs to be a pure sequence, and the remaining can be any valid sequence or set. You are not allowed to make a valid rummy declaration unless you have a pure sequence.

• Sets in Rummy (or Books): Three or four cards of the same rank. If you are using two decks to play, a set may include two identical cards of the same rank and suit.
• Runs: Consecutive sequences of three or more cards of the same suit.

Jokers in Rummy

They can help you win a rummy game; there are two types of jokers in Rummy.

Printed jokers work the exact same as the wild jokers. You can replace any card with printed joker to form sequences and sets.

NOTE: The aces (A’s) of all the suits become wild Jokers if the printed joker gets randomly selected as the wild joker.

Types of Sequences in Rummy Card Game:

There are two types of sequences in rummy card games.

NOTE: You can use a wild Joker to form a pure sequence if you use it in its original value and as a card of its original suit, not as a Joker.

Here Kings of clubs is the wild joker; the sequence formed is termed as a pure sequence as Jack, Queen, King of the same suit (clubs) and K has been used in its original value.

How to win in Rummy? 

After arranging all the cards in your hands in specific sets and or sequences, including one pure sequence, you need to declare the game by discarding one of your cards to the finish Slot. After declaring the cards, you must arrange your cards in proper sequence and or sets and wait for your opponents to show their cards.

Valid Declaration in Rummy Card Game 

The declaration is valid if 

• The 13 cards are arranged in valid sets & sequences according to the rules of rummy card game.
• It consists of a minimum of two sequences, one pure sequence and another sequence. It has at least two sequences, including one pure sequence, and other cards are in specific sets.

If you want to declare, you must have at least two sequences, including a pure sequence.

Declaring Without a Pure Sequence
