“Mary Had a Little Lamb” is an English nursery rhyme. It is originally from the 19th century. People say that this kids’ rhyme is based on a true story. In 1876, a woman named Mary Tayler claimed that she is the “Mary” from the poem. When she was young, she had a lamb as a pet, and she took it to the school after her brother suggested. The known writer of the lyrics of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” is Saran Joseph Hale.
“Mary Had a Little Lamb” Nursery Rhyme Lyrics
Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece was white as snow,
And every where that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go ;
He followed her to school one day—
That was against the rule,
It made the children laugh and play,
To see a lamb at school.
And so the Teacher turned him out,
But still he lingered near,
And waited patiently about,
Till Mary did appear ;
And then he ran to her, and laid
His head upon her arm,
As if he said—‘ I’m not afraid—
You’ll keep me from all harm.’
‘ What makes the lamb love Mary so ?’
The eager children cry—
‘ O, Mary loves the lamb, you know,’
The Teacher did reply ;—
‘ And you each gentle animal
In confidence may bind,
And make them follow at your call,
If you are always kind.’
I have seen kids and even adults to sing this popular kids nursery rhyme. People find it easy to learn and teach their kids the poem “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” My two-year-old niece Lavi is also a fan of this nursery rhyme, she keeps singing this whole time while playing with her toy sheep. Also one time I saw a wool seller singing this poem to his son, and the little fella was enjoying it.
